Fellow PTs and PTAs

Here is information on the NPI deadline. I am surprised at the number of PTs and PTAs that do not think they need an NPI number, so I am sending out this information from APTA.

Thanks,

Important: NPI deadline May 23rd 2007

National Provider Identification Numbers (NPI): It is highly recommended that all therapists, regardless of their practice setting, to obtain an NPI. The deadline to obtain an NPI is May 23, 2007. You can access information regarding the NPI at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProvIdentStand/06_implementation.asp or you can type “NPI” into the search engine at www.cms.hhs.gov. The NPI website has links to various resources associated with common NPI questions. The NPI will be used for claims as well as quality measure reporting (more on this noted below). There is no cost to obtain an NPI and the application can be submitted electronically, by fax or by mail. Even if a therapist is working for a facility and the billing is submitted under the facility’s NPI, it is recommended that all therapists have a NPI. The NPI is portable and stays with the therapist regardless of their employment site. The NPI will be used by all payers. Therefore, please recommend to your membership that they should obtain an NPI. The CMS web site has a terrific list of FAQs that you can use to educate your membership. Go to: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProvIdentStand/08_NPI%20Contingency%20Planning.asp

You can apply for an NPI online at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov or you can call for a paper application a 800/465-3203.
